How this timeline is built

Data snapshot: 2026-08-29. The timeline holds 167 titles and 18 character paths. Every number on this site, from the 53 essential flags to the runtime math, comes from one dataset, and every editorial sentence on it was written for this site.

Where the facts come from

Release dates and runtimes are maintained from public reference records including the Wikipedia Marvel film list and television list. Phase membership is checked against Marvel's official announcements and phase guides. The in-universe MCU sequence follows Marvel's published complete timeline. Future dates and streaming availability can move, so the snapshot date above is part of the claim.

We do not copy a third-party watch-list sequence. Source facts, official phase assignments, and the published MCU timeline are stored locally, then regenerated into the dataset that renders every page.

Where the words come from

All context notes, spoiler summaries, and viewing instructions are written by this site. We do not syndicate or paraphrase another outlet blurbs. Where a fact is contested among fans, the text says so instead of picking a quiet side.

What is in the dataset

  • Every theatrically released Marvel adaptation from Blade (1998) onward, plus every Disney+ MCU series and special, and the announced slate through Avengers: Doomsday.
  • The non-MCU catalog people actually argue about: the Fox X-Men saga, Raimi and Amazing Spider-Man, the Sony symbiote films, Blade, Punisher, Daredevil, Elektra, the two earlier Fantastic Four series, and the Spider-Verse animations.
  • Marvel One-Shots and credit-scene shorts, marked as specials, counted in runtime but never essential.

How titles are ordered

The tracker exposes three different answers. MCU timeline follows Marvel's current in-universe chronology. Release order is derived from theatrical and streaming premiere dates. All-universe guide order is our editorial path through all 167 titles, including continuities that do not share a canon. We keep these axes separate so Captain Marvel can sit early in MCU chronology while still remaining a Phase 3 release from 2019.

How the essential label works

A title is essential when skipping it breaks something later: an Infinity Stone introduction, a character debut the plot depends on, a multiverse rule the films build on. It is recommended when it deepens the story but the spine holds without it. Everything else is optional, including most of the pre-2008 catalog. These are judgment calls and we make them in writing on the watch order page so you can disagree with specifics.

For Avengers: Doomsday we also carry Disney+'s official 15-title preparation order, published August 2026, side by side with ours on the prep page. Where our recommendations differ, we say so and explain why.

Character paths

Each character path lists the titles where the character materially appears, in a practical viewing order, with a total runtime. We only build a path when following the character is a real viewing project: a handful of cameos does not earn a page. The bar is deliberately high; a page that lists every title a hero technically appears in for three seconds is noise wearing a costume.

Runtimes

Film runtimes include credits, because you stay for the scene after them. TV entries count the full season. Where a runtime is disputed by a few minutes between sources, we use the theatrical timing.

Streaming data

Platform availability is US-based and drifts, especially for the licensed Fox and Sony titles, which rotate services a few times a year. We track Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Max, Peacock, and Paramount+, which together cover nearly every title. Treat any single availability as "last verified" rather than a promise, and expect the rental-only stragglers.

Ratings

Audience scores come from TMDB. We show them as context, never as a verdict, and the essential labels ignore them entirely.

Covers

Title artwork comes from TMDB and is served locally from this site. Covers are illustrative; the product a service carries may use different artwork.

Corrections

Wrong date, wrong runtime, a title we missed: send it in. Corrections ship in the next data pass and the snapshot date at the top of this page moves with them. A changelog of material fixes will live here once there is history worth logging.
